I am playing my first character in Skyrim and I decided that I want to focus on conjuration. Up to now I used swords for close combat situations and transitioning into a bound sword seems to be a good choice. I looked up the damage a bound sword can inflict and it seems like that even the mythic version cannot do more than 14 damage per hit. My current sword already has a damage value of 35, more than double of the bound mystic sword. In addition I lose the possibility to enchant the sword or improve it through smithing.
On the upside I can use the perk to automatically cast soul trap which I really like. I can also use the bound sword to improve my conjuration skill. I don't use any skill boost tricks, so I need to level up conjuration naturally and the bound sword comes in handy for that.
Are those upsides enough to invest into the use of bound weapons? The lack of damage seems to be a real issue.

There are a few reasons why you would want to use one:
- It saves you weight from not having to carry one around.
- Like you pointed out, with perks, it can automatically soul trap an enemy, so you can use a better weapon unless you need soul trapping.
- With even more perks, you can banish summoned enemies. Note both of these can be reproduced via enchantments, but this way you don't have to recharge your weapon.
The drawbacks:
- Yes the base damage is high, but you cannot improve a bound sword via smithing, so the damage is really quite low during the end game.
- It lasts only so long, then you'll have to recast.
All in all, like you said, the lack of damage does become a big issue once you start investing into smithing.

The 14 is base dmg which means that it changes as you level up one handed! It has 14 dmg if you are lvl one in one-handed.
14 is A LOT of base dmg; in fact, it's the second best sword in the game as a daedric sword has 15 base dmg. So basically it's a good sword but at higher levels you may want to start using weapons and magic like a battlemage. Please remember bound weapons do Less damage to dragons because dragons have magic resistance.

For mages, there really isn't a point except to farm souls for soulstones. As a mage you want to keep your distance from your enemies. Plus, as a mage, your skill in one-handed weapons won't get as high to take advantage of the the skill bonuses. If you have a big ugly in your face, I think you're best off with some sort of enchanted weapon instead.

These swords are pretty good with all the perks and the One-Handed and the backstab perk. It comes with the enchantment of soul trap and banish so its good to use if you're need souls. Main problem is that it lasts 60 seconds and costs magicka. If you use one have the Unrelenting Force shout ready

I love the bound sword. It reduces weight and fills up soul gems rather quickly. In fact I use both the bound sword and bound bow. They are very useful when fighting necromancers and conjurers if you have the oblivion binding perk as it banishes atronachs and turns raised undead, though this does not work on unbound undead only ones raised by a spell or the ritual stone. Add to the fact that you can get it near the very beginning of the game and it makes for an excellent weapon.
There are 2 issues with it:
First, if you decide to smith, which I do, you cannot improve the blade. This causes it to be left behind by other blades if you improve them.
Second, you cannot enchant this blade. Enchanting a blade allows you to customize. For example when I get to daedric smithing I smith a daedric sword improve it then dual enchant it (you must have the perk) with fire and storm. This causes an extra 64 points of damage if you have all related perks and use a grand soul gem. It also deals 32 points of magicka damage making it extremely powerful.
All in all the bound blade is a good sword to use until you get daedric or dragonbone unless you want a custom enchanted blade. Also if you hesitate to switch due to losing soul trap enchantment enchant a weapon with soul trap and give it as well as empty soul gems to your follower. If they use the weapon they will fill the soul gems.

Nobody mentioned that you can't disarm a bound weapon, so draugr won't disarm you anymore.

I definitly recommend using it as a way to level up conjuration. Get in a fight with a giant, go to another side of a river, and keep on conjuring the sword, then sheathing to increse the conjuration lvl! It works really well!

Actually the both last for 120 seconds and with the mystic binding per and having the bow skill (bows do 100% more damage) it can do 48 damage not to mention with each lvl of archery the amount of damage done with a bow goes up by 0.8% so for a grand total of 180% normal damage or simply 67 damage. this will come in very handy for those who don't want to do all the work to get the deadric bow exploit i know i didn't and pair this with the right sneak skill it is a 1 shot kill because it summons 100 deadric arrows that do 24 damage each so 91 x 3 = 273 which is more than enough for most enemies even at high lvls. The sword can do 24 damage each so a total of 48 damage if u cast 2 of them. so yes u should use them especially the bows because without the deadric bow exploit it is better than a fully upgraded deadric bow with all the perks. and the swords come in handy as a mage who has to little magika to fight effectively u can summon 2 swords and fight while your magika regens. The bow comes in very handy when in every situation. Keep in mind this requies the mystic binding perk and the One handed, Bows do 100% more damage perks. If anyone wants to check my math go to the official wiki.

I would also advise on enchanting your gloves and boots with 'Fortify One Handed', preferably with a high enchanting skill and some Fortify Enchanting Potions. This will make all one handed weapons do lots of damage, but would be great to use with your Bound Sword since you cant improve it but it has a huge advantage over non-bound weapons in the late game due to it not being able to be disarmed.
user76122user76122
Bound Swords are thought to be just as good as an untouched Daedric Sword. Don't listen to people who don't know what they're talking about, and try actually researching it. It turns out that although everybody I have seen with real numbers usually have different numbers, the fact is that when looked at in detail, the swords are either very close to, equal to, or maybe even better then a Daedric Sword. Play how you want, but I advise sticking to them until you can smith and enchant Daedric or even Dragonbone (Dawngaurd DLC) swords.

Creates a magic <weapon> for <dur> seconds. Sheathe it to dispel.
Bound Weapon causes the spellcaster to be equipped with a magical version of the specified weapon for a duration of time, after which the weapon vanishes. To dispel the weapon before the time has elapsed, sheathe the weapon, or simply equip another spell or weapon in that hand.
Types of Bound Weapon[edit]
In each case, the second (Mystic) version of the weapon is the one that appears if the Mystic Binding perk has been unlocked.

Notes[edit]
- If the Soul Stealer perk has been unlocked, bound weapons automatically cast Soul Trap on strike.
- If the Oblivion Binding perk has been unlocked, bound weapons automatically cast Banish and Turn Undead on strike. Both effects are level 99, so they will affect any susceptible monster.
- Equipping a weapon or spell while using a bound weapon will cause the bound weapon to vanish.
- The exceptions to this are the Bound Sword and Bound DaggerDB. It is possible to equip another one-handed weapon or spell in the other hand. Note which hand the weapon appears in so you can choose the correct one. When cast normally, the weapon will appear in whichever hand you cast the spell from. If dual-cast, the weapon will appear in your left hand, so you can afterwards equip something else in your right. You can even dual-wield two Bound Swords/Daggers by casting them separately.
- You can also use a shield along with the one-handed bound weapons, but only in your left hand, so the weapon must be cast with the right hand, and thus cannot be dual-cast, since dual-cast always equips the weapon in the left hand.
- It is not possible to use any kind of Bound Weapon while on horseback. Mounting a horse automatically sheathes your weapon first, cancelling the spell. And you can't cast spells while mounted.
- Conjured weapons can be poisoned.
- Conjuring a weapon makes noise, which can attract unwanted attention while you are sneaking. This can be prevented with the Quiet Casting perk.
- Using bound weapons in combat also increases your Conjuration skill, on top of the skill associated with the bound weapon used (One-handed for the Bound Sword and Bound DaggerDB, Two-handed for the Bound Battleaxe and Archery for the Bound Bow). No Conjuration experience is gained by casting a Bound Weapon spell out of combat; however, if you cast a conjuration spell before combat, and later enter combat with the conjuration effect still in place, some Conjuration experience is awarded.
- Bound Bow will also give you a quiver of 100 Bound Arrows upon casting, which acts as any other bound weapon. Bound Arrows have a damage rating of 24, the same as Daedric Arrows.
- You can use the arrows of your choice along with the Bound Bow (e.g. Dragonbone Arrows, which are the only ones that are better than Bound/Daedric Arrows), by equipping the arrows after casting the spell, though you can't get your Bound Arrows back without recasting the spell. Regular arrows will still deplete as normal if you use them with a Bound Bow. You cannot, however, use Bound Arrows along with a regular bow.
- Any Bound Arrows that you have fired (whether they hit or missed) will continue to exist in the world even after the spell expires until you leave the area. They cannot be picked up or found in corpses' inventories like other arrows. As they are very easy to see, they can be useful as markers to remind yourself where you've been. The arrows can contribute to bloating a save game.
- The Bound Bow is an exceptionally desirable weapon in the early stages of the game - unmodified through perks, it is very fast and of Daedric power. The relevant Spell Tome is found in Fort Amol Prison under a lantern in a bucket, guarded by five mages in total. Casting the spell will require 183 magicka at 15 (base) Conjuration skill, <180 as of 17. This amount of magicka may be achieved as early as level 1 via Necromancer Amulet (50 magicka bonus and + 25 fortify conjuration) or any combination of Novice Hood (30 magicka), AtronachStanding Stone (50 magicka, found just to the east of Fort Amol) and Altmer Highborn racial bonus (50 magicka) as well as outright through periodic consumption of Elsweyr Fondue (100 magicka).
- With Patch 1.9 the Bound Bow with Mystic Binding garners more XP per hit than any other bow in the game.
Bugs[edit]
- Occasionally, when casting Bound Battleaxe, you may have no weapon or spells show up as equipped but will constantly have the animations of carrying the bound axe. You cannot draw any weapons or spells even if you change equipment, and cannot sheathe this phantom axe. This effect does not seem to wear off when the spell would have ended.
- The issue appears to only arise when you cast in the third person view, so as long as you remember to switch to first person before casting you shouldn't have any problems.
- Sitting down will fix this.
- Equipping a one handed weapon will fix this.
- The invisible bound axe can be 'unequipped' by equipping hotkeyed spells.
- Bound Bow will turn raised undead even when you don't have the Oblivion Binding perk. ?
- While sneaking, casting bound weapons can occasionally result in a longer than usual delay.

[edit]
This mod adds a nice and cozy little Dwemer house to Riverwood. It also includes a fast travel point on the map so you won't have to walk through a city to get to it (like all of the other houses).
Lord of the Rings Weapons and Ring
[edit]
These two mods add in some items from Lord of the Rings, which actually fit in very well with Skyrim.
Dragonbone Weapons
[edit]
This mod adds in something that really should've been in the game from the start, dragonbone weapons craftable at the forge. The creator is an actual graphic artist, and you can tell that by the great detail in the weapons.
Assassins Creed Brutus Armor
[edit]
This mod adds in an amazing looking armor to the game that was heavily inspired by an armor variant in Assassins Creed: Brotherhood.
Follower Mod: Dave the Dragon
[edit]
This mod adds in a little but ferocious Dragonfollower that cannot die. He doesn't take up a companion slot but you can't interact with him at all.
Assassin Squads
[edit]
This mod adds in a squad of assassins to chase you down once every week. It adds a much needed element of danger and surprise to this game. Something special also happens if you sleep during Loredas, which is shown in the video.
Comments
For almost all character builds, knowing the best weapons in Skyrim for each type is going to be worthwhile. Some are available early on, too, through side quests or otherwise, which can be a massive help for playthroughs on harder difficulties, or for those with a burning desire to power through to Skyrim's late-game content.
Skyrim best weapons explained
Whether you're looking to tackle some of the more bizarre Daedric quests, or power-level your Smithing to craft Dragonbone and Daedric weapons, the weapon rankings below should be of some use to you, but before you dive in there are a couple of quick things to bear in mind about how we've structured it all:
- If you're looking to craft or enchant your weapons, be sure to check out our detailed guide to power-levelling Smithing and Enchanting skills to hit that level cap and craft the best weapons in the game as quickly as possible.
- An 'N/A' for Perk means you need to boost your Smithing past 100 with Alchemy to improve it beyond Flawless - specifically, you need to max your Smithing level to 100 and then use potions of Fortify Smithing to boost it beyond that, at which point the weapons in question, which don't benefit from any of the Smithing skill Perks, can then be improved beyond Flawless quality.
- The weapon sections below, excluding the Bows and Crossbows, are in order of lowest to highest damage and weight - so daggers first, with their low damage and low weight, moving ending with the heaviest and highest-damage Warhammers.
- For bows, higher weight means faster arrow travel speed, and normally a slower nocking speed.
- For one- and two-handed weapons, a higher weight means a slower swing speed, so for the most damage-per-second you'll want a combination of high base damage and low weight.
- If a weapon is listed as not enchantable, that will generally mean it's not disenchantable, either.
- We'll give a little extra context for our rankings in each section, but bear in mind we're considered damage-per-second here, too, so in many cases weight is just as important as raw damage!
- Unique items are marked with an asterisk * and we've briefly explained how to get them in that section's notes. Standard items like Daedric weapons, meanwhile, can always be found through either random loot or crafting.
- Stalhrim weapons' Frost Damage bonus is actually more powerful than it looks - the 'Chaos Damage' enchantment, which has a 50% chance of dealing 25 fire, frost, and shock damage simultaneously, is also boosted, making it an extremely potent choice for skilled enchanters.
The best Bows and Crossbows in Skyrim
A couple quick things to note about the bows and crossbows below:
- The Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow is part of the Dawnguard questline, and can only be obtained if you side with the Dawnguard over the Vampires. This specific type of crossbow is available to craft or buy after finding the schematic in one of the sis 'Ancient Technology' quests.
- Crossbows, whilst generally more powerful than bows in terms of damage, take a fair bit longer to fire each shot. They can also be equipped with exploding bolts of various damage types, too, which stack with any enchantments on the crossbow itself.
- Zephyr is found in the Dwemer ruin Arkngthamz during the Dawnguard quest 'Lost to the Ages'.
- The Nightingale Bow is found in the Inner Sanctum after you've defeated Arch-Curate Vythur in the Dawnguard quest 'Touching the Sky'.
- Note that with bows, there is generally a tradeoff between rate of fire and damage, and the choice depends on your playstyle. For stealth characters, higher damage bows like the Dragonbone, Daedric, and Nightingale bows are preferred, as they give you a greater chance of taking characters out in one hit from stealth and remaining undetected. For archers who expect to get in the mix a little more, attack speed is preferred, with bows like Zephyr and Auriel's bow, to help you maximise the stagger effect of your Perks, and deal sustainied damage as quickly as possible in extended combat.
- In the table, 'DPS' refers to the damage-per-second of the bow, taking into account both the bow's total speed to fully nock and fire and arrow, and it's base damage.
Weapon | Damage | Weight | DPS | Upgrade with | Effect | Enchantable |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow | 22 | 21 | N/A | Dwarven Metal Ingot, Dwarven Smithing | Ignores 50% of armor | Yes |
Dragonbone Bow | 20 | 20 | 15 | Dragon Bone, Dragon Armor | None | Yes |
Auriel's Bow* | 13 | 11 | 13 | Refined Moonstone, Elven Smithing | 20 Sun Damage, tripled if target is Undead. Can use Sunhallowed and Bloodcursed Arrows | No |
Zephyr* | 12 | 10 | 12 | Dwarven Metal Ingot, Dwarven Smithing | Fires 30% faster than a standard bow | No |

Nightingale Bow* | 19 | 18 | 9.5 | Ebony Ingot, N/A | 30 Frost Damage, 15 Shock Damage | No |
The best Daggers in Skyrim
Daggers have the highest attack speed and lowest base damage of all weapons in Skyrim, but that doesn't mean they should be ignored. In fact, for all One-Handed skill users, they can be essential:
- Dual-wielding means that the swing-speed of the fastest weapon is applied to both. So, for duel-wielders, equipping one of the below daggers like Mehrune's Razor, which has a tiny weight of just 3, will apply that same weight to a massive Daedric Mace when put in the other hand.
- Blade of Woe is acquired from either pickpocketing or killing Astrid of the Dark Brotherhood, or completeing the Dark Brotherhood quest 'With Friends like These'. If you pickpocket it from her before completing that quest, you can in fact obtain two copies of the weapon.
- Mehrunes Razor is a reward for completing the quest 'Pieces of the Past', if you opt to kill Silus Vesuius.
Weapon | Damage | Weight | Upgrade with ingot, Perk | Effect | Enchantable |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dragonbone Dagger | 12 | 6.5 | Dragon Bone, Dragon Armor | None | Yes |
Blade of Woe* | 12 | 7 | Any, Steel Smithing | Absorb 10 health | No |
Mehrune's Razor* | 11 | 3 | Ebony Ingot, N/A | 1.98% chance to instantly kill, infinite charges | No |
Daedric Dagger | 11 | 6 | Ebony Ingot, Daedric Smithing | None | Yes |
Stalhrim Dagger | 10 | 4.5 | Stalhrim, Ebony Smithing | Frost Damage enchantments 25% stronger | Yes |
The best Swords in Skyrim
Swords are, as you'd expect, the most popular weapons in Skyrim thanks to their versatility and balance of both speed and damage. They're the fastest non-dagger one-handed weapons, but have lower damage than their mace and war axe counterparts.
- Windshear, firstly, benefits from appears to be a bug, whereby every attack with it will stagger your opponent - even dragons - rendering them completely unable to attack or reatreat as long as you continue to strike them with the right timing. It is only possible to obtain during the Dark Brotherhood quest 'Hail Sithis' on board The Katariah, where it's lodged, Excalibur-like, right at the very top of the ship's prow.
- Miraak's Sword is obtained by killing Miraak in the Dragonborn quest 'At the Summit of Apocrypha'.
- Chillrend can be found during the quest 'The Pursuit', inside the tunnels under Riftweald Manor in Riften, and can also be obtained by breaking into Riftwead Manor and accessing the tunnels from inside, after doing a spot of roof-hopping to get inside. Chillrend is levelled, too, meaning you get the stats we've detailed below at level 46 and over.
- Nightingale Blade is acquired as a reward for completing the Thieves Guild quest 'Hard Answers', and is also levelled, with the maximum stats we detail below gained if you're at level 46 or above.
Weapon | Damage | Weight | Upgrade with | Effect | Enchantable |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Windshear* | 11 | 10 | Steel Ingot, Steel Smithing | Staggers opponent with every hit; 39% chance to paralyze opponent with block-bash | No |
Miraak's Sword* | 16 | 3 | Ebony Ingot, Daedra Heart, Dwarven Smithing | Absorb 15 Stamina | No |
Chillrend* | 15 | 16 | Refined Malachite, Glass Smithing | 30 Frost Damage, Chance to paralyze for 2 seconds | No |
Dragonbone Sword | 15 | 19 | Dragon Bone, Dragon Armor | None | Yes |
Nightingale Blade* | 14 | 15 | Ebony Ingot, N/A | Absorb 25 Health and Stamina | No |
The best War Axes in Skyrim
There aren't too many exciting options for those who prefer to bear a one-handed axe in Skyrim, but there are still one or two things to note:
Sikh girl name from guru granth sahib starting with m. Sikh Boy Names » Begins with » Amar. 1985 Amar Forever; The Immortal One; Long 7 Amarat God's Nectar; Immortality. 14 Amarit God's Nectar. 52 Amarbir Eternally Brave. 4 Amardas Add Meaning. 50 Amardev The Immortal God. 45 Amargun Immortal Merits. 74 Amarjit One who has Conquered the Deva's. - The Dawnguard Rune Axe is rated first because the 110 damage to undead can in fact be locked in by tempering the axe at a grindstone. It can also be improved with only the Steel Smithing Perk unlocked, making it an exceptional early-game choice. In certain situations, it's one of the best one-handed weapons you can get your hands on.
- The Rune Axe is acquired by completing the Dawnguard quest 'Lost Relic'.
Weapon | Damage | Weight | Upgrade with | Effect | Enchantable |

The best Maces in Skyrim
- The Mace of Molag Bal is acquired from the Daedric quest 'The House of Horrors'.
- Molag Bal is only 1 damage lower than Dragonbone Mace but is much lighter, meaning a higher overall DPS - but this can be overcome with strong enchantments to the Dragonbone Mace.
- Same with Stalhrim, this time with the bonus enchantment damage making it a stronger choice overall.

The best Greatswords in Skyrim
Greatswords operate as the fastest, but lowest base damage weapons of the two-handed class. There are few unique ones of note, although the Bloodskal Blade provides an intriguing option.
- The Bloodska Blade is located next to Gratian Caerellius' corpse in Bloodskal Barrow, during the Dragonborn quest 'The Final Descent'.

Ebony Greatsword | 22 | 22 | Ebony Ingot, Ebony Smithing | None | Yes |
The best Battleaxes in Skyrim
The middle tier of heavy weapons, the battleaxe class also plays home to one of the best weapons in the game, Wuuthrad.
- Wuuthrad is obtained during the Companions mission 'Glory of the Dead' - note that you'll need to place it in the hands of a statue of Ysgramor during the quest, but can be immediately removed after doing so.
- The HEadsman's Axe can be acquired from two people, Ahtar from Solitude, and the Imperial Headsman in the opening prisoner sequence. It can only be obtained from Ahtar, by their gaining him as a follwer and taking it from him for free, pickpocketing it from him, or killing him and looting his corpse.
Weapon | Damage | Weight | Upgrade with | Effect | Enchantable |

The best Warhammers in Skyrim
The heaviest of heavy weapons, warhammers are the slowest to swing but deal the greatest amount of damage per hit.
- Volendrung is one of the Daedric artifacts, obtained for completing the Daedric quest 'The Cursed Tribe'.
- The Longhammer is acquired from the cave Liar's Retreat, southwest of Solitude. It's located next to the body of Rahd, it's former owner.

Hello
I'm wondering if someone could make a mod that fixes the Bound Sword CTD bug?
On the elder scrolls wiki it says there's a bug for PC that makes the Bound Sword CTD when summoned in the right hand, it says it can be fixed by clicking yourself in the console and typing in resurrect, but if you do this then you lose all your active affects and who knows what else.
I'm having a problem where every time I use bound swords my game crashes, I did the resurrect thing and afterwards I was able to use them again, but I lost all my active affects.
it said you can just re-add them back with console but I cant with mod active affects because I don't know the id for them. (and please don't suggest something that leads me to re adding them with the console, I'm not sitting there for an hour typing them in, plus I don't like using the console for this stuff)
if someone would make this I would be so grateful.
